Reputedly had familial ties to the Lowland Scottish clan Broun of Colstoun. This has yet to be verified; the offices of the Scottish Lord Lyon King of Arms holds a document dating to the 9 April 1755, confirming John Brown's ties to the Brouns of Colstoun and giving him and his descendants right to bear the clan's coat of arms, but fails to cite any sources and to draw up the genealogical connection. Instead, church records show ties with several merchant families of Edinburgh.

Fled according to family tradition to Denmark following the Battle of Culloden, in which the father, William Brown, is reputed to have perished. This has also yet to be verified; seeing as very few Lowland clans supported the cause of Bonnie Prince Charlie and that William is reported to have been in the employ of the Marquess of Tweeddale, a Lowland Scottish aristocrat loyal to the English crown, it must be deemed unlikely until proven by contemporary sources. Furthermore, William Brown is not mentioned at any time after the year 1736, in connection with his daughter's baptism. It is thus yet unknown whether or not he was still alive at the time of the Jacobite rising.

kibsreder og grosserer John Brown (1723-1808) kom til Danmark i 1846. Han bllev ansat i handelshuset Nicolai Fenwich i Helsingør, hvor han blev fuldmægtig, og i 1750 kom han til København, hvor han 1755 løste borgerskab som grosserer.

I 1759 indgik han et kompagniskab med sin bror David Brown (1734-1804), og de handlede i firmanavnet John & David Brown. Firmaets skibe sejlede især på Vestindien og Middelhavet og senere også på Ostindien. I 1787 ejede de 17 skibe, bl.a. flere fregatter.

John Brown var aktionær i Asiatisk Kompagni og fik fra omkring 1760 plads i ledelsen og var fra 1770-1775 og 1779-1785 direktør i AK. Han sendte desuden for egen regning skibe til Ostindien fra 1774, hvor hans bror, David Brown, var guvernør fra 1775 til 1779.

John Brown købte i 1781 skibsværftet bag ved Christianskirken fra van Osten til sin ældste søn William, der året efter blev optaget i firmaet, der skiftede navn til John & William Brown & Co.

Da neutralitetsperioden under den amerikanske frihedskrig sluttede og tiderne blev dårligere for skibsfarten, havde Brown ikke kapital nok til at fortsætte, og rederiets skibe blev 1788 solgt og andre værdier realiseret. Sønnen William døde samme år, og firmaet ophørte.

John Brown blev 1756-10-20 gift med Anna Applebye (1738-1798), datter af skibsreder Peter Applebye. De fik foruden William Brown børnene James Brown (1767-1811), skibsreder og gift med Mette Marie Sørensen; Anna Margaretha / Margrethe Brown (1761-1814); Cathrine Marie (Polly) Brown; Peter Brown (1760-1803) blev købmand på St. Thomas; John Brown; David Brown (1769-1808) blev styrmand; og to andre børn.

James og Mette Marie Sørensen fik børnene Peter de Nully Brown, John James Brown, Ulriche Elisabeth Brown, William Werner Brown, Rebecca Mariane Georgine Brown og tre mere.
