Biography

John Browne, of Charles City was born between circa 1608 and 1610 in England.

John married Temperance Cocke circa 1631 in Virginia. Together they had the following children:

John Brown, of Henrico;

Martha Stratton;

Mary Platt, widow Tanner.

He died circa 1632 in Charles City County, Virginia.

He married Temperence BAILEY ABT 1631, daughter of Thomas BAYLEY and Cicely REYNOLDS. She was born ABT 1617, and died ABT 1652 in "Bremo", Henrico (now Fluvanna) Co., VA.

	  Children of John BROWNE and Temperence BAILEY are:

• John BROWNE was born ABT 1632 in Henrico Co., VA.
• Martha BROWNE was born EST 1632 in Henrico Co., VA, and died ABT JAN 1696.

About 1632 according to minutes of the Colonial Council, on 5 June 1632, Richard Cocke married the widow of John Browne and was appointed trustee and guardian of the Browne children. On October 10, 1652, a land patent re-issued to Richard Cocke included 100 acres of land due by patent to Temperance Bailey, September 20, 1620. It would seem that Richard Cocke inherited 100 acres due Temperance Bailey because she was his wife, widow of John Browne, deceased.
It is not clear what children of Temperance and John Browne survived. There is one possible son, a John Brown, who died before 1677 [SIC: 1684]

apparently John did have multiple children (birth dates unknown), because the Court of James City, on 5 June 1632, "paymnt of John Browne's debts having married the relict of said Browne ... Cocke is to keep some calves for the use of the Children of the said Browne ... Richard Cocke shall have he use of the said money towards the bringing up of the said Children until they Come to age."[2]

Temperance (Baley) Brown Cocke, b. 1617 in VA:
In 1631, Temperance Baley m. John Browne I and had two children.This John Browne was dead by bef. 05 Jun 1632, as she was already the wife of her second husband, Richard Cocke.
Of the two aforementioned children, John Browne II m. Sarah _:
Children of this marriage appear to be Temperance Brown, Jeremiah Brown m. Elizabeth Sheppey, and Sarah Brown.
This data also appears not to have any blood or marital linkage to the Edward(e) Brown I descendants.
