notes

Will of John Browne (dated 30 April 1546) of West Hoathly, Sussex

For those who are interested the family of the son Thomas (who bought West
Hoathly manor, previously rented by his father) is given in "The Story Of A Forest Village, West Hoathly" by Ursula Ridley Published by The Friends of The Priest House, West Hoathly 1971. Although this is a dramatised account, the persona have been well researched.

The son William is said to be the William (-1613), vicar of Horley, Surrey and m 1560 Magdalene, possibly surnamed Elsick. He was father of Joseph Browne (-1633), vicar of Rusper, whose Will I have given here previously, and this Joseph was father of William Browne (-1649/50) who emigrated to Long Island, New York and left issue there.

NICHOLAS BROWNE, son of EDWARD BROWNE and ?

From the History of New Hampshire, p. 1560: (I) Nicholas Browne, son of Edward Browne, of Inkburrow, Worcestershire, England, settled first at Lynn, Massachusetts, and early removed from there to Reading, where he appears to have owned two places. He was a man of comfortables means as appears from the fact of his sending his son John, in 1660, to England to look after certain property, to which he had become heir. He died in 1673. His wife's name was Elizabeth, and their children were, John, Edward, Joseph, Cornelius, Joshua and perhaps Elizabeth.

From A Genealogical Dictionary or The first Settlers of New England showing Three Generations or Those who came Before May, 1692 on the Basis of Farmer's Register by James Savage, Vol 1, p 272:

Nicholas, Lynn 1630, as Lewis Conjectured, but I think 7 years too early, son of Edward, of Inkberrow, 8 miles from Droitwich, Worcestershire; freeman 7 Sept. 1638, rep. 1641, removed to Reading 1644, and died April 5, 1673. His eldest son John went in 1660 to England, but came back and was excor. of the will of 29 March 1673, made by his father pro. 17 June following in which with Elizabeth and other children Josiah; Edward born August 15, 1640; Elizabeth and Joseph, 10 December 1647;possibly another Sarah, 26 June 1650 are mentioned

"There is a lot of speculation on Thomas' father but this information was the best documented. He married Elizabeth Lyde in England and is supposed to have arrived in America in the spring of 1630 on one of the eleven ships in the Winthrop fleet.

One of the problems in listing Thomas as Nicholas' son comes from the fact that some sources list him as being born in Lynn. Other sources, however, say that he was born in England and accompanied his father, Nicholas, to America from England. He should not be confused with the Thomas Browne from Malford, weaver, who came over about 1635. Our Thomas would have been only 7 then. Thus Thomas, born in England, would not have been listed in the Essex Co, Mass. records and could easily have been overlooked as a son of Nicholas.

Another problem is that when Nicholas inherited his maternal grandfather's property in England, "he gave power of attorney...to his eldest son John Browne bound for England to call William Rand to account for the shops, houses and lands belonging to him as next heir of the Lides." Which Rand recovered by a former power of attorney from Nicholas Browne. Somehow John was named the eldest son. Maybe, an assumption on the clerk's part or to give him more leverage. Perhaps there was no elder son, Thomas, but then there is this.

Nicholas and family were among 1700 people who sailed in the Winthrop fleet from Southampton in spring 1630. Nicholas and three other men from the fleet moved to the Lynn area, one of whom was Thomas Newhall, our Thomas Browne's father-in-law." - www.sound.net/~beckins/mason
