About John Samuel Browning
John came to New Zealand in 1856, as the Captain of the Whaler "Susan". He joined the Canterbury Public Works Dept in 1857 as an assistant surveyor and draughtsman. He worked with Arthur Dudley Dobson (Arthur's Pass}. He discovered Lake Browning and Brownings Pass in 1865. In late 1865 he set up a Survey Department in Hokitika for the Westland Goldfields,where he was the District Surveyor. In 1876 he was appointed Chief Surveyor in Nelson, In 1891 was appointed Commissoner of Crown Lands, and retired in 1897. He retired to Tomes Road, Papanui Christchurch, and was buried in 1909 in Area 7 Row A at Papanui Cemetery.
