About John Burrough

John Burroughs married Phoebe Haines the daughter of John Haines and Ester Borton. John Haines was the son of Richard Haines and Margaret Leeds. Richard is an ancestor of President George H.W. Bush and President George W. Bush. Richard died in route to America. John Burroughs and Phoebe Haines had a son, James who was a patriot during the Rev War. He served as a fifer with the NJ 3rd and was at Valley Forge with his son, John Burroughs. Please note: Date of death for John Burroughs is entered incorrectly. It should read after 1747.

John was the son of John Burroughs, of what was then Newtown, now Elmhurst, Queens Co., New York, and his wife, Margaret Woodward Burroughs.

He married twice, to Elizabeth Unknown and Mary possibly Jennings.

John migrated from Long Island, New York to Ewing Twp., Hunterdon (now Mercer) Co., New Jersey about 1705, along with many of the other pioneer families.

His will was signed 1772.

It is assumed, but not confirmed, that John was buried in First Presbyterian Church of Ewing Cemetery. He was a founder of the church, being listed along with 16 others in 1709 as receiving the deed transfer, and lived nearby for the rest of his life.
