About John Burrus, Jr.

Information from: The Families of LOU DRAPER & CHARLIE MARTIN of Johnson and Henry Counties, Missouri" by James M McMillen, Arlington, Texas. Published in .pdf format 13 January 2010

JOHN BURRUS, Jr., is believed to be the son of John Burrowes (or Burrus), Virginia planter who arrived there aboard the Survivor in 1608. His mother is believed to be Bridget Langley, described as "widow of Rev. Richard Bucke." He lived in St John's Parish, King William County, Virginia, and died there before 1705. He had at least three children:

  • Thomas Burrus
  • Edmund Burrus
  • Jacob Burrus (died about 1755, Caroline County, Virginia), married Mary Burrus*. Tharp(96) says this was Mary Tandy. Issue:
    • William Burrus
    • Jacob Burrus
    • Henry Burrus (born before 1721)
    • Thomas Burrus (died before 5 November 1772), married Sarah Martin
    • Charles Burrus
    • Elizabeth Burrus
    • Ann Burrus
    • Justinia Burrus
    • Mary Burrus.

John Burrus / Burris Jr. (this profile) was in turn the father of John B. Burrus, aka Burris, born in 1646 and died in 1705. He married Kathleen Woodward, daughter of William Woodward, a neighbor on the north side of the York River.

Alas, many family genealogists have confused these 3 men (I count myself in their number initially), mainly in ignoring John Burrus Jr., b: 1625, stating he married a Kathleen Woodward who was born ca. 1630 (made up to match his 1625-28 birth) and then died in 1705. In reality, it was his son: John B. Burris, born in 1646 who married Kathleen Woodward, b: 1650, in 1670 and who died in 1705. There were 3 generations of early John Burrows / Burrus / Burris in 17th Century colonial Virginia.
