40.JOHN ANDERSON5 BUTCHER (PAULSER 4METZGER/BUTCHER, GEORG VALENTIN 3, JOHANN PHILIP 2METZGER, JOHANN JACOB 1)189 was born January 22, 1783 in Harrison Co. VA (WV)190, and died October 05, 1868 in Near Butchersville, Lewis, WV191.He married CHRISTIANA "TENA" ALKIRE192 March 25, 1804 in Harrison (Lewis) Co. VA (WV)193, daughter of JOHN ALKIRE and CHRISTENA WOLF/MCCANN. Notes for JOHN ANDERSON BUTCHER:

           NOTES FOR JOHN ANDERSON BUTCHER
JOHN ANDERSON BUTCHER and CHRISTINA (TENIE) ALKIRE.He was the fifth child of PAULSER AND ELIZABETH (BUSH) BUTCHER. He was born Jan 22, 1783 and died October 5, 1868.She was born July 15, 1786 and diedApril 5, 1874.They married March 25, 1804 and are buried in the BUTCHER CEMETERY in Turnertown, WV on the West Fork River, about three miles from Weston, WV.She was the daughter of John and Christina (McCann) ALKIRE, among the first settlers in the area.
From his war record it seemed he lived in Harrison County (W)VA. Since Lewis county was created in 1816, it is probable that John A. lived in that part which became Lewis co.
John A. BUTCHER was reared onGee LIck, two miles below (which means north of) Weston, WV.
Their home was located on a cliff, back from the river and in the rear of his father's home. Currently, enroute from Weston to Turnertown, it is to the left of the road with the old site on the cliff overlooking the entrance lane leading to the present BENNETT place(the former LewisCounty Fairgrounds and/or the old Paulser BUTCHER home)24-0-7
John A. was a soldier in the War of 1812, served in Captain DAVISSON'S Company, from Harrison County. Their service was around Norfolk, VA6-0-20.He also served with Captain John Bozarth's Co.5th regiment of Virginia Militia(Colonel William Street) and was
discharged on 10 Nov. 1814.1-1-14
The land records at Weston note him as having many transactions, one of which 80 acres lyingon Polk Creek, in 1843. Deed book "1", page 328, notes Paulser and Elizabeth BUTCHER selling 100 acres to John BUTCHER on April 9, 1822 for $600; on this deal John BUTCHER was bonded by Jacob BUSH, Adam FLESHER, Charles FLESHERand Henry WALDECK; originally this land was 150 acres patented by Paulser BUTCHER on Nov. 9, 1804 and 40 acres
purchased by Paulser BUTCHER from Elijah STAATS on April 20, 1801. The said 100 acres are located on the waters that empty on the west side of the West Fork River, between Gee Lick and Maxwell's Run.24-0-9
In his father's will ( Paulser BUTCHER) dated19 July 1829 it states:" I also give to my sons George and John BUTCHER a tract of land that I hold the Commonweths PATTON for of 78m acres lying on the Sand Fork waters of the Kenhawa River known by the name of Tanners' Camp they are to divide the 78 acres of land equell between themselves as they may see proper" ( Note:
I have typed this as was originally written).
NOTE:Child #10:In the book "Paulser BUTCHER and His Descendants"VirginiaDean LAWSON, she shows a son, John b- 1825 (listed in 1850Census of Lewis county, (W)VA), but we have never found any ot evidence of him. "Brown's Genealogy" says he died in Cincinnatti, OH unmarried. We feel this must be another family. Child #15 (John G.) and #16 (MichaelB) are listed in a manuscriptof J.Arthur BUTCHER and information needs to be verified.
From an article in the "Gilmer County, WV History" submitted by Robert Butcher:
John Anderson Butcher (Jan22,1783/Oct.5, 1868) was the second known son of Paulser and Elizabeth (Bush) Butcher. His place of birth was probably Augusta County, VA. He died in Lewis county, WV, and is buried with his wife in the Butcherville cemetery. His military record included that period known as the second war with England, or the war of 1812. John A. Butcher was a volunteer and served in George J. Davisson's company from Harrison County, Virginia, and in the company of Captain John Bozarth, 5th regiment of Virginia Militia, under Colonel William Street in the vicinity of Norfolk, Virginia. John Anderson Butcher was discharged May 10, 1814. A man of short stature, he always wore a "stovepipe hat" and prided himself in his neat appearance. In addition to his extensive farming operation, he was also a distiller, but he himself was temperate, as were most of his sons.
The 1850 census of Lewis county shows:
John Butcher as age 68, his wife Christina as 63, with children John G. 25, Elizabeth 23, Mary 22, and Margaret 19.
