Notes for John Haynes Butler On the baptism record for his son John Haynes in 1850 it was indicated that he lived in Port Beaufort, the current Witsand South Africa. His occupation was given as working in a mercantile store. Although the current records gives the birth place of his children William James, Mary Ann and Louisa White as Swellendam, this is based on information from an unconfirmed source. It is likely that they were also born in Port Beaufort. After the baptism of his son John Haynes, his occupation is consistently given as a painter living in Swellendam right through to the baptism of his daughter Jane, two month before his death. A second bond was held by John Joseph Barry to the value of £200 sterling. This bond was also payable annually at 8% interest.
