John Duncan Vaughan Campbell of Cawdor, 5th Earl Cawdor of Castlemartin was born on 17 May 1900. He was the son of Hugh Frederick Vaughan Campbell of Cawdor, 4th Earl Cawdor of Castlemartin and Joan Emily Mary Thynne. He married, firstly, Wilma Mairi Vickers, daughter of Vincent Cartwright Vickers, on 15 May 1929 at Aldenham Church, Aldenham, Hertfordshire, EnglandG. He and Wilma Mairi Vickers were divorced in 1961. He married, secondly, Elizabeth Topham Richardson, daughter of John Topham Richardson, on 29 June 1961.He died on 9 January 1970 at age 69 at Cawdor Castle. He gained the title of 5th Earl Cawdor of Castlemartin, co. Pembroke [U.K., 1827] on 7 January 1914. He succeeded as the 6th Baron Cawdor of Castlemartin, co. Pembroke [G.B., 1796] on 7 January 1914. He succeeded as the 5th Viscount Emlyn, of Emlyn, co. Carmarthen [U.K., 1827] on 7 January 1914. He fought in the First World War, with the Royal Navy. He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (T.D.) He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Pembrokeshire in 1928. He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches. He was Lieutenant-Colonel. He was appointed Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.) He was appointed Fellow, Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (F.S.A. Scot.)1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Geographical Society (F.R.G.S.)
