About John Campbell, Lord Stonefield
Biographical Summary
"Son of Archibald Campbell, advocate, was admitted a member of the Faculty of Advocates, 9th January 1748. On the death of Charles Erskine of Tinwald, he was elevated to the bench, and took his seat, as Lord Stonefield, 16th June 1762; and on the resignation of Francis Garden of Gardenston, was also nominated a Lord of Justiciary, 1st March 1787. He resigned the latter appointment in the year 1792, but retained the former till his death, which happened at Edinburgh on the 19th of June 1801, having been thirty nine years on the bench."
