Disputed Origins

"The family tree in the 18th century document found in recent years among the papers from an estate in Virginia, and outlined in the second of Dr. Ruby Campbell's articles on the subject in the Clan Campbell Society (North America) quarterly Journals (Vol. 28 No.2 Spring 2001 pp. 46-48 & Vol. 28 No. 4 Autumn 2001 pp. 47-49), is the earliest known record of this family to date, and while a secondary source rather than primary, it does offer some possible clarification of relationships. It clarifies that there was a Duncan Campbell who married Mary Ramsay (said to be of the Dalhousie family - discussed in the article) followed by their son John Campbell, followed by his son John Campbell who appears to have married Mary McCoy. Their son John Campbell (3rd of the name) married Grizle Hay, daughter of Patrick Hay, while John's sister Jean/Jane married James Hamilton (who appears to me was living in 1753 and 1762 (see article for source)).

John Campbell (205) is considered to be the immigrant Patriarch of a line of Campbells that settled first in Old Chester Pennsylvania, perhaps as early as 1726, and who moved west and south into the Valley of Virginia by 1742. The family is often connected by genealogists to the Campbell's of Argyll, Scotland, but the nature of the connection, if any, is obscure. There is also a view that the family line emigrated from Scotland to north Ireland around 1600. Different genealogists place them in different parts of North Ireland, both east and west of Londonderry. Some place the line at the Drumabold townland, Kilmacrenan, Donegal. The family oral history of the Drumabold Campbells identifies two waves of immigration, one in the first part of the 18th century, and one to the first part of the 19th century. In this view it is the first wave that came to settle in the Valley of Virginia. These stories may be simply apocryphal, and whether they have any bearing on the line of John Campbell (205), the Patriarch, is not clear. In any case, references to the line of the Argyll Campbells, Drumabold Campbells, etc. should be taken with a grain of salt.

Notes

"The family tree in the 18th century document found in recent years among the papers from an estate in Virginia, and outlined in the second of Dr. Ruby Campbell's articles on the subject in the Clan Campbell Society (North America) quarterly Journals (Vol. 28 No.2 Spring 2001 pp. 46-48 & Vol. 28 No. 4 Autumn 2001 pp. 47-49), is the earliest known record of this family to date, and while a secondary source rather than primary, it does offer some possible clarification of relationships. Their son John Campbell (3rd of the name) married Grizle Hay, daughter of Patrick Hay, while John's sister Jean/Jane married James Hamilton (who appears to me was living in 1753 and 1762 (see article for source)).

This John's sister was named Jean/Jane Campbell and she married the above James Hamilton (son of Arthur Hamilton and a Miss Boyne) and they (Jean and James) were parents of Arthur Hamilton who married Mary Cunningham (whose parentage the tree also gives). Arthur and Mary had a daughter Mary Hamilton who married her cousin David Campbell, younger son of John Campbell (3rd of the name) and Grizle Hay. Their son, Arthur Campbell, married his cousin Margaret Campbell (see below) The elder son of John Campbell (3rd of the name) was Patrick Campbell who married Elizabeth Taylor. Patrick was also living in 1752 (see article for source). Their son Charles Campbell and his wife Margaret Buchanan had five children. The eldest was General William Campbell of King's Mountain (d. 1781 and m. Elizabeth) while one of his sisters, Margaret Campbell, married Arthur Campbell (above). " [1]

If you review all of the ~current~ published research for this that is linked above, you'll see WHY all of the "incorrect" sources are all also cited. They're all just from researchers that didn't have all of the sources that were available now and were mostly all old books published 1880-1920, where they didn't have nearly the access to resources like we do now for in depth research.

"Patrick had a son Hugh, and he a son Andrew. The generations from Andrew to our great-grandfather John [husband of Grace Hay] are not stated. It should be to Duncan, father of John Campbell, [who] emigrated to America with his family in the year 1726 and settled in the Sweet Ara river where Lancaster now stands in Pennsylvania. He [meaning John Campbell, husband of Grace Hay] had six sons, Patrick, John, William, James, Robert and David. Three - to wit - John, William and James were never married. John died in in England having gone there with Lord Boyne and became [his] steward."
