About John Carman

Here we have the beginning of what was a great confusion in the Long Island lines. For one, we have the fourth consecutive John Carman in a row and there are more to follow. Second we have the first of the Adam Carmans. third we have a lot of the land moving around that will later be known as Baldwin, Long Island, then known as Hick's Neck.

"His name appears frequently on the town books of Hempstead in connection with realty transactions, usually as grantor (presumably as only son of an eldest son, he had enough to spare). - "John-1 Carman of Hempstead, Long Island and some of his descendants thru his son John-2", Henry Alanson Tredwell,Jr., Brooklyn, NY, August 1946.

"8th May 1752, John Carmon of Hempstead to Thomas Tredwell, 60 acres on Hicks' Neck (HTR vol. IV pp, 162-165). 16th September 1756, John Carmon to Thomas Tredwell, bond, right of way through meadow lot on Hicks' Neck, lately conveyed by said Tredwell to said Carman." 12th September 1761, John Carmon of Hempstead to Dr. Charles Peters and Thomas Tredwell, 1/3 part of 20 acres on Hicks' Neck." - Genealogies of Long Island Families, New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Henry Hoff, 1987. - (this appears prima-fascia to be John4 who married Elizabeth Ireland.)

"May 24, 1754 Benjamin, Richard, and James Smith, all of the town of Hempstead, yeomen, sold for $240, to John Carman, 85 acres at Hicks Neck, bounded by a clear field of theirs (recorded in 1763; HTR 4:336)". - "Genealogies of Long Island Families", NYGBR, Genealogical Publishing, Baltimore, 1987, vol.2, p.75. (This could be John's son John, however this John does not pass on for another 30 years and is undoubtedly still in control of any estate).

John4 Carman (John3, John2, John1) was born about 1676 in Hempstead Township and died in the same before 1781(he appears in Hempstead Town Records as late as 1774). He married about 1714 Elizabeth Ireland, daughter of Thomas Ireland and Mary Abraham, born 1695 at Hempstead, Queens, New York. He married a second time, wife unknown with one child.
