About Captain John Carman, VI

http://www.carman.net/john3,_john2.htm

"John-3 Carman was prob. the Hempstead man of that name described as a saddler in 1717 (REC 65:323), which occupation he may have followed all his working days. He was probably a farmer as well (HTR 2:381/3). His stock mark consisted of a swallow fork in the right ear and a halfpenny under the left ear (HTR 2:94). He was a Captain, doubtless in the local militia, and was so designated in the 1698 Hempstead census (REC 45:54 ff) and other times (HTR 3:40,65,79). In 1685 he was the owner of 180 acres in Hempstead (HTR 8:130). In 1698, he deeded to the heirs of his brother, Benjamin-3, all which had been left to the latter in the will of John-2 Carman, the parcel of land "at the south" excepted (HTR 2:139/40). John-3 was living 1720 (brother Caleb's will) and doubtless as late as 1725 (HTR 3:79)." - "John-1 Carman of Hempstead, Long Island and some of his descendants thru his son John-2", Henry Alanson Tredwell Jr, Brooklyn, NY, August 1946.

John3 Carman (John2, John1) was born about 1653 at Hempstead, Long Island and died about 1725 or a bit later probably Hempstead. He married Miriam Cooper, daughter of Simon and Mary Cooper of Oyster Bay, about 1675.
