Spurious Pedigree
It has been suggested that John Carmichael here treated is the son of John, first Earl of Hyndford (d. 1710), and his wife Henrietta Johnstone, but this is wrong. John, first Earl of Hyndford, actually married Beatrix Drummond. It was Sir John Carmichael of Bonnytoun (d. 1691) who married Herietta Johnstone. Moreover, the date of birth suggested for Henrietta Johnstone's husband, that is 28 February 1638, is in fact the date upon which the baptism of John, seconf Earl of Hyndford, was registered at Edinburgh. Old Somerset
John Carmichael here treated was enrolled as a burgess of Glasgow on 29 September 1679, and cannot have been any younger than twenty-one years of age on this date. It follows, therefore, that he must have been born before 29 September 1658, eleven years and more before John, Earl of Hyndford, was contracted to marry Beatrix Drummond The Scots Peerage IV: 591 and twenty-six years and more before Sir John Carmichael of Bonnytoun married Henrietta Johnstone on 15 May 1684 Ibidem: 587
John Carmichael here treated was a merchant in Glasgow. He was enrolled as a burgess and guild brother of Glasgow on 29 September 1679. He was admitted in right of his marriage to Anna Kincaid, who is identified in her husband's burgess record as the daughter of the deceased William Kincaid, merchant burgess and guild brother of Glasgow. The Burgesses and Guld Brethern of Glasgow, 1573-1750, p. 214
John Carmichael here treated married Anna Kincaid. Glasgow Burgesses, 1573-1750: 214 The marriage was booked on 31 July 1679, at Glasgow in Lanarkshire, Scotland. [National Records o Scotland, Glasgow Marriages, 1612-87, reference OPR,644/1/23]
