About John Carmont

John Carmont, a substantial farmer married Elizabeth Caven in 1826 in Buittle, Stewarty of Kirkcudbright, South West Scotland. The 1851 Scotland Census for the Urr parish has them residing at High Stree, Delbeattie in Kirkcudbrightshire with a number of children, including Alexander 10, John 16, and Allan 9. (They had nine children)

They and all their family emigrated to New Zealand (between 1851 and 1855) to be with their daughter AGnes, who at age 24, a domestic servant, emigrated to Wellington, NZ as a steerage passenger on the 'Phoebe Dunbar' which sailed from London on 10 July 1850 and arrived in Dunedin on 24 October 1850 - thereafter to Lyttleton, Nelson, Wellington & New Plymouth. She left the ship in Wellington in November 1850 - she was engaged for 3 years as companion help to Mary Ann Clifford, who with her husband, Charles Clifford (later Sir Charles), farmed large areas of land inthe Wairarapa and Marlborugh districts.
