About John Joseph Carroll
His mother's name on the Baptismal certificate is shown as Elizabeth Berkery. Sponsors were Thos. Shea and Mary Finn. The registration records of the period were destroyed in the Post Office, Dublin, in the Rebellion of 1916. John went to New Zealand in 1884. Married Johanna McCormack. 6 April 189 1. in St Patricks Cathedral, Auckland, by Rev J a Hackett.

There has always been a question of John J's mother. He never talked about his background and it was always wondered why he was so well educated and none of the others in his family were. He won a scholarship to the London School of Economics but they were too poor for him to take it up. Had notable athletic and musical career.
In the New Zealand electoral rolls from 1896 to 1938. In 1896 he is listed as a gum digger living at Dargaville. From 1900 to 1919 he is listed as a miner living at Thames. From 1928 he is listed as a mine manager living at 18 Telford Avenue, Auckland.
