About John Henry Carroll
John Henry Carroll birth date was put forward 2 years by his parents so they would qualify for a family passage to Freemantle. His father Michael Carroll was a pensioner guard on the first prison ship to Freemantle. After his mother, Bridget Carroll died, in about 1860 the family moved to Adelaide S.A. It was there that John Henry volunteered to join the armed forces being assembled for the Maori disturbances in Taranaki NZ.
