Obituary
John Mason Cate, 93, of 1381 Oak Park Place, formerly of 12653 Seippel Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a parish scripture wake service at 3 p.m.
He was born on Aug. 30, 1914, in Missouri Valley, Iowa, son of Paul L. and Grace A. (Norton) Cate. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1932.
He married Mary Florine Roussel on April 15, 1941, at St. Philomena's Catholic Church in Asbury, Iowa.
Mason retired from farming in 1972, and later held several jobs including selling cars at Beckett Chevy and Olds in Dyersville, Iowa.
He was a longtime member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish, where for 30 years he served as a hospitality minister. Mason also was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5513, Peosta, Iowa, and a 4-H leader and advisor to the Youth Committee.
Surviving are his wife, Florine, of Dubuque; his children, Nancy (Rollin) Duensing, of St. Clair Shores, Mich., Robert (Sharon) Cate, of Asbury, Carol (Francis) Boland, of Boscobel, Wis., and Jay Cate, of Omaha, Neb.; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren; a brother, Peter (Doris) Cate, of Vienna, Austria; a sister, Grace Schnorenberg, of Dubuque; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Cate, of Galena, Ill.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald; a granddaughter, Danielle Cate; a sister, Dorothy Newburg; three brothers, Lawrence, Robert and Edward; three brothers-in-law; and three sisters-in-law.
