About John Chamberlain

John2, Chamberlain (son of Henry “the blacksmith” Chamberlain and Jane); b. About 1626, England. Married (1) Ann Brown, 19 May 1653, Boston, MA (widowed); (2) Catherine Chatham, about 1663, probably Boston, MA. Died Apr 1666, Newport, RI.

Notes:

In 1661, Henry and his father presented a petition to the General Court on behalf of his brother John, who had been imprisoned for his Quaker beliefs.

A note from the source "Steve Miller":

He was baptized at St. Andrews Parish. He was a currier. I don't know for sure whether he was married in America or England. After John married Catherine Chatham, a Quaker, he was publicly whipped, imprisoned and banished from the colony under penalty of death if he returned. John and Catherine moved to Newport, Rhode Island in 1663 where the last three children were born. I don't know if his first wife, Ann Brown, died or if the divorced. I have no idea what he did to merit the harsh treatment that he received from the Quakers.

A note from the source of Mark Freeman:

Note: John Chamberlin was a currier, who worked with leather and garments. He was admitted as an inhabitant of Boston, July 28, 1651, and purchased a house from William Courser of Boston on Hanover St. on Oct . 14, 1652. He became a Quaker and by September 1661 had been whipped nine times, "three times through three towns." He was present at the execution of Marmaduke Stevenson and William Robinson, and the reprieve of Mary Dyer, on Boston Common, Oct. 27, 1659, and was drawn to visit the Quakers in prison. He became a Quaker, and before Sept. 9, 1661, had been nine times whipped, "three times through three towns." He was imprisoned in Boston where his father and brother Henry petitioned the General court for a remittance of his "sentence of banishment upon Payne of death. "The Deputies ordered him removed to Castle Island, there to provide himself lodging, housinge, vitualls, etc. at his own charge." That petition was dated 7 June 1661. About 1663 he moved to Newport, RI , where he died April 1666.

from findagrave:

John Chamberlin was an early American Quaker. After witnessing the persecution of Quakers and the execution of two of their missionaries, John became sympathetic to their cause. He visited imprisoned Quakers, attended Quaker meetings, and joined them in their mission to bring the new faith to Massachusetts. He soon tasted the cruelty of the Quakers' Puritan oppressors. He was arrested, imprisoned and three times tied to the back of a cart and whipped through Boston, Roxbury and Denham, but he remained a steadfast Witness for the Lord's word. Each beating made him stronger in his faith, a faith that carried him through his sufferings with cheerfulness. His wife, Anne Brown, father, Henry, and brother, William, though they were not Quakers themselves, supported John in his suffering, and would not abandon him. He was finally released from prison in November of 1661. His wife Anne died in Boston soon thereafter, and John removed to Newport, Rhode Island, a well known haven for Quakers.

John married Catherine Chatham, in 1663. Catherine was a dedicated and outspoken Quaker who, like John, had been whipped and imprisoned in Boston and banished. She came to Boston from London in about 1659, answering the Lord's will, and dressed in sackcloth and ashes as a sign of the Lord's displeasure with Massachusetts Puritans, created dramatic and provocative disturbances. After their marriage and removal to Newport, the couple seem to have resumed more settled lives, he as a currier, and she as a wife and mother.
