"John Chandler (Sr.), also known as 'Grandsire Chandler,' was born in the year 1755 in Lunenburg County, Virginia to Joell and Agnes Chandler. On Jan 10 1775 in Halifax County, Virginia he was married to Ritta (maiden name unknown). At the age of 21, he volunteered for service with the South Caroline Militia and served until 1782. He was later granted a pension for his services. On May 17 1784 he received a Land Grant of 28 7 1/2 acres in Newberry County, SC. and is listed in residence there in the 1790 Census. In 1820 he had moved his family to Walton County, Georgia, but according to military records had moved on to Gwinnett County, Georgia by October 5, 1832. Sometime between 1832 and 1837, his wife, Ritta, died. Her place of death and burial are unknown. In 1837 he signed a note to a bank in Huntsville, Alabama and was in residence there on May 22, 1839 when h e divided his property among his children. By 1840 he was in Benton Count y, Alabama and remained there until his death on February 19, 1850, at the age of 95."
