About John Chandler
John Chandler de Oare (i.e. of the village of Oare, Wiltshire) was the oldest son and heir of Thomas Chandler de Oare. John was baptized in the parish church of Wilcot, Salisbury, on February 23, 1602-03.
His father died in 1629, and in 1630 he was chosen to be Churchwarden of Wilcot in his father's place. He held this office until his own death.
As one of the principal freeholders of Wilcot, his name appears frequently in minor records, such as being a juror.
His first wife was named Ann. (We are descended from her.) They were married about 1626. She died in April, 1633, after giving birth to her third child, George Chandler (our ancestor). George was the only one of the three children to have descendants.
John Chandler then married Winifred and had two more children, Daniel and Walter. Daniel died as an infant. Walter Chandler married and had two daughters. Winifred died and was buried in Wilcot May 16, 1679.
John Chandler died at his house in Oare in March, 1684. He was buried in the Wilcot Churchyard on March 26, 1684. The inventory of his personal estate is filed with his will and dated 11 February 1684. The total valuation was 264 pounds, made up principally of household goods and farm stock.
Siblings of John Chandler might include Elinor (Ellen) Trumbull and William Chandler.
