About John Clearman (Clermont)
Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Morristown, NJ - Lot 55, Section 7
per Leah Clearman Laffey, drummer boy and foot soldier with Lafayette's army in the American Revolutionary War. Fought in the Battle of Monmouth and others. Business was "craftsmanship".
Name "Clermont" was always mispronounced -- became "Clerman" and later "Clearman".
At the conclusion of war service, received a grant of land in New York City -- per Muriel Deetjen's DAR application.
According to letter (which I, EWL JR have) written by LCL to new bride, Shirley A Laffey, in 1940s, John had 5 sons - Abram,William,George,Henry & John - & one daughter - Emily, all born in NYC. My research also shows an1839/40 Longworth's (NYC) Directory listing: "John Clearman, 44 Downing, musical instruments; James Clearman, musical instruments, 19 James,(h) 23 Burton; Henry Clearman, grocer, 33 Christopher; George M. Clearman, merchant, 92 Wall,(h) 153 Monroe." A decade earlier Longworth's, 1829/30, "John Clearman, Bedford c Downing....Henry Clearman, grocer."
