John Coddington, Sr.

Unproven as husband of Elizabeth Coddington

Baptized in St. Martin's Church. Probably still in England 6 June 1634 when he was given 40s. in the will of his aunt Emma Maddocks.

John and his wife Mary left London in April, 1635 aboard the Susan and Ellen (on passenger list as "John Corrington") and settled in Boston, Massachusetts. Mentioned in Boston town records from 30 March 1646 on. When his father died in Hampton, New Hampshire, John inherited his land which he sold the same year.

Here follows a fragment of an unpublished, undated ms. by John Insley Coddington, included because it gives some information on a probably related Coddington family in Reigate.

…JOHN CUDDINGTON or CODDINGTON (Stockdale1), of Dorking, co. Surrey, and Boston, was baptized at Dorking, 26 May 1605, and died at Boston, 18 Aug. 1655. He was mentioned in the will of his brother-in-law Raphe Dalton, of Dorking, in 1631, and witnessed that will. The date of his emigration to New England is not known. On 15 Jan. 1648/9, "Wm. Mullins and John Cuddington did upon oath testifie that Hugh Burt of Linne was sonne of John Burt some times of Dorking in Surrey deceased and elder brother of Thomas Burt late of Dorking aforesaid deceased. Taken upon oath before John Winthrop, Governor." (Aspinwall Notarial Records, p. 190). John Coddington was administrator of his father's estate 9 April 1650. [He was probably [marginalia, No!] the "Brother Coddington" mentioned by John Beauchamp of Reigate, co. Surrey, in his letter to William Paddy, dated 20 July 1649 (Edmund Freeman Genealogy, by Frederick Freeman, p. 23). If so, then he was the John Coddington who married at Reigate, co. Surrey, 22 Sept. 1642, ELIZABETH FREEMAN, sister of Alice (Freeman), wife of John Beauchamp. Elizabeth Freeman was baptized at Pulborough, co. Surrey, 22 Sept. 1609, daughter of Edmund Freeman, senior, of Pulborough, yeoman and Alice (Coles) his wife, and sister also of Edmund Freeman, who came to New England on the "Abigail" in 1635 and settled at Sandwich. Elizabeth, wife of John Cuddington received a bequest of 30 shillings in the will of her brother in law John Beauchamp (P.C.C., 109 Aylett), if she were living at the time of the testator's death. This will was dated 6 June 1653. and this fact casts some doubt upon the identification of John Cuddington of Dorking and Boston with John Cuddington, husband of Elizabeth Freeman, for John of Boston certainly had a wife Emm in 1651. It is possible that Elizabeth (Freeman) Coddington died about 1650, in New England, and that her brother-in-law John Beauchamp did not know of this when he made his will in 1653. The language of the will tends to support this hypothesis. At all events, John Cuddington or Coddington married, perhaps (secondly) and probably in New England, about 1650/1, EMM, or EMMA, who survived him. An inventory of the estate of John Coddington, deceased, was made at Boston, 27 Aug. 1655, by Richard Peacocke and Edmund Jacklin, and on 13 Sept. 1655, administration of the estate was granted to Emm Coddington, widow of the desceased. Emm did not long remain a widow, for she was married at Boston, 7 may 1656 to John Jepson, by whom she had issue: John b. at Boston 1 March 1656/7; d. there 19 July 1657; Richard, b. at Boston 14 June 1660; and John, b. at Boston 8 may 1661. The date of Emm's death is unknown.

• He owned land in 1645 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts. 277 Situated on the east side of Washington St., next beyond the corner of Essex St. going north from ____Cole. The corner of Wasington and Essex St. (NE) belonged to Griffith Bowen and here a Liberty Tree later stood.. To the north of John Cuddington was the land of John Odlin.

Thomas Buttolph on the East & ____ Peck on the North & the high streete on the west. & this was by an absolute deed of sale dated 28 (4) 1650.
