About John Conyers
In 1739 Edward Conyers purchased the Elizabethan "Copped Hall" from Sir Thomas Webster who had owned it since 1701. Edward Conyers died three years later in 1742.
Edward Conyers son, John, inherited the property and considered repairing it as it had become dilapidated. His brother-in-law, Sir Roger Newdigate, carried out detailed drawings. However, plans for a new Georgian PalIadian mansion were drawn up by another architect. In the end only the main block was built - on a different site to the Elizabethan mansion - completed by 1758, with parts of the old house and gardens being retained.
8 Sep 1775 John Conyers died and '
his son, John'
, commissioned architect James Wyatt to make internal changes.
- The next member of the family to inherit Copped Hall was his son Henry John Conyers (1782–1853) who was said to be so obsessed with hunting that he neglected the house badly.
