About John Hamilton Cook

PARENTAGE: per these papers, father of John Hamilton COOK was James Cook; mother was Grace HAMILTON, born at Morton-in-Cleveland, Yorkshire, ENGLAND. Father of John was John Cook and mother was Jean DUNCAN.The above James Cook is buried at Great Ayton Churchyard, Yorkshire, England, after April 1772. Information taken from Books on Navigator Captain James Cook,James Cook was a brother of John Cook our ancestor.

Father James (senior) and the two boys as a team gained an excellent reputation. They were rewarded by Thomas Skottowe the Lord of the Manor of Great Ayton when father was appointed as bailiff of the Cleveland villages and James and his brother were given paid education at the village school. James continued on as an apprentice to William Sanderson a shopkeeper in Straithes for 18 months and then became apprentice seaman for three years to John Walker a ship owner at the port of Whitby. In 1747 James went to sea at age 18.

John Hamilton Cook of Yorkshire, Englan was the father of Jacob and Valentine. He died when Jacob was 8 and Valentine 6. Elizabeth Cook then married William Sly and went to live in Amsterdam, Holland with him. The boys learned both German as well as the English language there.The Sly family came to America circa 1750 landing at Philadelphia. They lived several years in York Co., PA. Later they moved to join a German Colony at Greenbriar Settlement, then of VA but now part of W. VA. This taken from "The Echo" published by Phillip Hamman Assoc. of Amer. Nov. 1995.

John was the first cousin of the renowned mariner, Captain James Cook. John married Elizabeth Eaton. They had seven children:
