John Corliss, son of George Corliss & Joanna Davis, was born Born 4 Mar 1648 at Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, and died there 17 Feb 1698.

He married(1) Mary Wilford, daughter of Gilbert & Mary (Dow) Wilford, on 17 Dec 1684 at Haverhill, Essex, MA Bay - their children were John II, Mary, Thomas, Hannah, Timothy, Jonathan & Mehitable

After his death wife Mary married William Whitaker, on 28 Jan 1702/3 at Haverhill, Essex, MA Bay.


JOHN2 CORLISS (George1), of Haverhill, "farmer" and soldier, b. March 4, 1647-8(Hv); m. Dec. 17, 1684(Hv), Mary Wilford (Gilbert of Hv). He worked for his uncle, Joseph Davis, before the latter's death, in 1671. (Court rec., 1673.) He served in King Philip's War, under Lieut. Benj. Swett, June, 1676, also Aug., 1676. Oath al. Nov., 1677. He d. Feb. 17, 1697-8. Adm. est. Aug. 1, 1698. Wid. Mary m. Jan. 23, 1702-3, Wm. Whittaker. Children: John, Mary, Thomas, Hannah, Timothy, Jonathan, Mehitable. [ref 36:114]

Notes

John served in King Philip’s War, under Lieutenant Benjamin Swett, June 1676, also August 1676 . He owned at least one slave, Celia. In 1798 John’s house was valued at $350. He inherited the farm from his father, George Corliss and lived there all his life.


He inherited his father's farm and spent his life in Haverhill. His name appears among the soldiers of King Philip's war and he received pay from the town for his service, August, 1676; took oath of allegiance, 1677. He gave each of his children a good English education and provided liberally for them in every way.
