John was a very large man (weighed up to 500 pounds) and fought in the Rev olutionary War. He later went to Kentucky about 1800 with his son Martin a nd lived and died in Kentucky. He is referred to by Martin In the Dickey D iary.

I have marriage license to Elizabeth Campbell James in Orange County, Nor th Carolina. He married he after Mary Polly Boone died. He is suppos ed to have served as a wagon driver and/or he was with Washington at the c rossing of the Delaware for General Washington in the Revolutionary War.

"John married third to Mary Patterson" (No actual proof of this third marr iage) I do believe that John Couch married Elizabeth James though. ...s ee will in North Carolina Wills, Orange County, North Carolina # 1752-18 00 by Ruth Herndon Shields. Book C, page 79. Will in archives proven to/17 96 signed Mary Patterson. "All her estate to be equally divided amoung t he surviving children of Couch and Betsy, his wife decased.

The names of the children now living are Mary Couch, Letitia Couch, July C ouch, Elanor Couch and Elizabeth Couch. All are under 18 years of age. John Couch and Polly Boone had 6 children. After Polly died, he married El izabeth James Campbell, who was divorced from Patrick Campbell. Martin w as the only issue of this union. After Martin was born John divirced Eliza beth and returned to Orange County, North Carolina and married Mary Patter son. They had 5 daughters before Mary died in 1796. They are mention ed in her will.

He was married to Elizabeth James on December 2, 1783 in Orange County, No rth Carolina. He was divorced from Elizabeth James. Elizabeth is sa id to be related to the famous Jessie James according to information in t he John J. Dickey Diary.

After Polly died He married Elizabeth James Campbell, who was divorced from Patrick Campbell. Martin was the only issue of this union. After Martin was born John Divorced Elizabeth and returned to Orange Co. NC and married Mary Patterson. They had five daughters before Mary died in 1796.



John did NOT weight 500 lbs as some think. He was a wagon driver, but, it was the wagon that could carry a load of 500 lbs.
