John Covell

COWELL, EDWARD, Boston 1645, cordwainer, by w. Margaret had John; Joseph; Elizabeth b. 17 Aug. 1653, d. next yr.; and William, perhaps the youngest, b. 28 June 1655; was capt. some time in Philip's war; d. 12 Sept. 1691. Perhaps he took sec. w. Sarah Hobart, m. at Hingham, June 1668. EZRA, Plymouth 1643, able to bear arms. JOHN, Boston 1670, blacksmith, s. of Edward, d. Dec. 1693. JOSEPH, Boston, cooper, br. of the preced. m. a. 1673, Mary, d. of Richard Carter, wid. of William Hunter. JOSEPH, Woburn, m. 27 Feb. 1685, Alice Palmer, had Elizabeth b. 25 Nov. 1686; Alice, 6 Apr. 1689; Philip, 12 Feb. 1692, d. very soon; Joseph, 9 Dec. 1694; Sarah, Aug. 1698; and perhaps rem.

Biography

John Cowell is the son of Edward Cowell and his first wife Margaret (unknown). He was born about 1644. John married Hannah Hurd. His father named him and his brother Joseph Cowell in his will of 1682. John Cowell was a blacksmith. He held town office as Clerk of the Market for Boston in 1675.

John passed away in 1693. The grave marker inscription says he was 49 years old. Their son William, and grandson William were early American gold/silversmiths.
