Death Of John W. Cox
John W. Cox, well known former newspaper man, and a former resident of Palmyra, died this morning at his home in Monroe City following an extended illness. Mr. Cox was a brother-in-law of Mrs. J. W. Christian, of this city, and Mrs. Laura and Mrs. J. W. Scott, of Hester.
Mr. Cox was born near Hunnewell, Mo., and was a son of the late John and Mary Cox. He was married January 2, 1884 to Miss Ella Lyle, who is a sister of Mrs. J. W. Christian, of Palmyra.
For many years Mr. Cox was prominent in newspaper circles. He first became a publisher when he owned the Shelbina Torchlight and later he purchased the Monroe City News which he converted into a semi-weekly newspaper. Having sold this publication to the present owner, Miss Anne Nolen, Mr. Cox came to Palmyra where he purchased the Marion County Herald, which he converted into a semi-weekly and was its editor and publisher for several years. After retiring from the newspaper field here he returned to Monroe City to make his home.
Mr. Cox was a man of fine intellect and principal. His method of fair dealing and congenial disposition won him many friends in Palmyra who will remember him with a great deal of fondness. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Monroe City.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ella Cox, one son, Paul Cox, of Oklahoma City; a granddaughter, Mrs. Kathryn Dudley and one sister, Mrs, Mary Ragsdale, who lives in Shelbina.
While funeral arrangements have not yet been completed, burial will be in the Andrew Chapel cemetery, near Warren.
A good man has gone to his reward.
