John Crockett II

  • Born [date unknown] in Maryland
  • Son of John Crockett Sr and Mary (Coale) Crockett
  • Brother of Elizabeth (Crockett) Richardson, Mary Crockett and Hannah (Crockett) Dorsey
  • Husband of Mary (Richardson) Hopkins — married 1747 in Baltimore, Baltimore, Marylandmap
  • Died 1747 in Baltimore, Maryland

He was the son of John Crockett and Mary Cole. He passed away in 1747.

John Crockett II (-1747)'s will, probated in Baltimore County, Maryland on 31 Aug 1747 mentioned his sister Hannah, his brother-in-law Eli Dorsey & Eli's daughter, Mary and his nephew Nathan Richardson. His widow Mary (Richardson) Crockett was the administratrix. [1]

John Crockett II's administration bond in Baltimore was posted by his widow Mary (Richardson) Crockett on 2 Jan 1747, where he was named as "John Crockett the second". [2] Mary Crockett, Joseph Richardson, and Philip Hopkins were bondsmen.

Hopkins of Virginia states that Mary Richardson was married to a "Colonel John Crockett of the British Army" before she remarried to John Hopkins.

In 1751 Mary (Crockett), wife of Ely Dorsey, came into possession of 650 acres of land, being a part of a tract called the Isle of Capere surveyed and patented to John Crockett (-1736) who died without a will. The tract became the right of his son John Crockett II (-1747) as heir at law and when he died without a legal will, Mary and her sister Hannah, who married Bazil Dorsey, became co-heirs to the said tract of land. (Bolt. Co. Deeds T.R. No. D, f. 182)

From Maryland Historical Magazine, Vol 77, no. 4: Eli Crockett was an early trustee 15 and his sons, Gilbert and John, were active members of the Bush River Meeting. Gilbert married Mary Chew in 1727 and John married Mary Richardson in 1747 in Quaker ceremonies.

Authors note: Sutherland made a mistake when he wrote that John's marriage was to Mary Richardson. It was actually John Crockett II who married Mary Richardson in 1747, because John Crockett was deceased by his inventory in 1736. This mistake was re-published in Baltimore County Families where Barnes wrote that John Crockett (-1736) married Mary Richardson instead of John Crockett II (-1747).

From Baltimore County Families: CROCKETT, JOHN (3) ( John Crockett ), son of Eli (1) , m. Mary Richardson (see author's note) d. by 1736 when his inv. listed a number of books; she d. by 11 June 1742 when Nathan Richardson admin. the est.; had iss.: ELIZABETH, m. Nathan Richardson of William and Margaret on 30 d, 8, 1735; MARY, m. 24 Jan. 1744 Elie Dorsey; JOHN, in Nov. 1742 chose Nathaniel Richardson as his guardian; HANNAH, living in March 1742/3, was prob. the Hannah who in 1750 owned 656 a. of Capito (3:284; 34:60, 125; 131; 153:88).

Author's note: it must be noted that Baltimore County Families cannot be correct regarding John Crockett (Sr)'s marriage to Mary Richardson, as it occured in 1747. [3] John Crockett Sr was deceased by 1736, and had a wife Mary who was administratrix in his will - presumably Mary Coale given the marriage record of John Crockett and Mary Coale at the Sandy Spring MM in 1716.

Also see Baltimore County families' writeup of the John Crockett II (-1747), whose will was probated in 1747. In his will, he lists his nephew, Nathan Richardson, and aside from the death of John Crockett Sr in 1736 making it clear that a 1747 marriage is impossible, John Crockett II naming Nathan Richardson as his nephew is strongly indicative that it was actually John Crockett II (-1747) who died 1747 that married Mary Richardson, not John Crockett Sr died 1736.

From Baltimore County Families: CROCKETT, JOHN (5) ( John Crockett II (-1747) ), s. of John (3), d. by 2 Dec. 1727, having m. Mary Richardson, dau. of Joseph Richardson, in 1747; his will, 31 Oct. 1747 - 2 Dec. 1747, left sis. Hannah 500 a. Isle of Caprea, w. Mary 500 a. Marino and 300 a. Colerain, res. of Marino to Mary, dau. oi his bro.-in-law Eli Dorsey, and res. of his tract Colerain to nephew Nathan Richardson of Nathan; admin. bond was posted 2 Jan. 1747 /8 by wid. and extx. Mary Crockett, with Joseph Richardson and Philip Hopkins; Mary was alive in 1750 and was listed as the owner of 712 a. Marino (11:374; 111:12; 153:l).

Author's note: Another mistake in John Crockett II's write-up here - he was not deceased by 2 Dec 1727, it was actually 2 Dec 1747 as written in his will. Additionally - to clarify, John Crockett II's widow Mary was actually Mary Richardson.
