About Capt. John Daniell

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Daniell-665

John was baptised 15 January 1642/3 St Mary's Church, Rotherhithe, Surrey, England ('Johannes' Daniell, father 'Johannes' Daniell). His brother Robert was later baptised 1 Apr 1647 at the same church, son of John and Sarah 'Danielle'. Their father John was a sea captain. [1]

John's letterbook is in the Kent Archives, England. This book has copies of letters sent to his brother Robert Daniell of South Carolina and also records about John's own ship, the New London. (see below) [2]

The brothers John and Robert Daniell had the same coat of arms (Argent, a pale fusilly sable), which is also the coat of arms of the Daniel family of Chester. [3] [4]

In 1660 he came into possession of the manor St Mary Hoo (St Mary Hall, St Mary Hoo, Kent, England). 'Sir William Wiseman, of Rivenhall was created a baronet in 1660, who alienated this manor [St Mary Hoo] to Captain John Daniel. His daughter and Heir carried it in marriage to Mr Thomas Faunce' [England's Topographer]

Marriage: 08 April 1665 John Daniell, of Greenwich, Kent, Mariner, Bachr, 22, & Judith Curtis, Spr, abt 20, da. of Joseph Curtis, of Lewisham in sd co., Gent., who consents; at Lewisham or Lee, Kent. [marriage licence]

They had children:

  1. John, died 1709 Strood, Kent, (Ann Faunce his sister was administrator)
  2. Ann, possibly the Ann born about 1672 Greenwich (baptised St Nicholas Greenwich Feb 26 1671/2), she married Thomas Faunce, d. 1750 (note age 82 on her MI, so born 1668?)

1681 He charts some islands off the coast of Western Australia.

John Daniell's letter book: (transcriptions by Heather Stevens, December 2019) - I will be adding more - Heather The copies of the letters in the book demonstrate the difficulty in sending letters across the Atlantic at that time. John's wife Judith refers to her in-laws as 'brother' and 'sister'. All the letters are copies written by John Daniell, and after his death by his wife Judith. There are no copies of letters received. The following are excerpts from the letters and some of the spelling has been corrected:

  • to Capt John 'Gouldsborough' (Goldsborough see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goldsborough ) july 31 1681 from ship London Bantum re the estate of his brother Christopher. 'brother Christopher dyed with being 200 dollars, a diamond ring & a ruby'
  • April 1st 1693, to his brother, Robert Daniell of Carolina (It is a long letter, and difficult to read the writing. It is to be taken there by Mr [Guiward?] on the ship [fondsight?] at Spithead):

John Daniells made a will 1695, describing himself very sick and weak on September 20th1695. This will went to probate in October the same year. In his will are wife Judith, daughter Anne Faunce, son John and Thomas Faunce. Son John was a minor and inherited when he was 20. He must have died, because Anne was classed as an heiress and mentioned as an only child in other historical records. Canterbury Will found on Ancestry
