Records regarding John M. Dean need many corrections. John M. Dean was born ca. 1780-1790, in S.C. or N.C. No proof has ever been found pertaining to his date of birth and place of birth. He died sometime after the 1840 census and prior to the 1850 census of Lowndes Co., AL.
He served in the Georgia State Militia during the War of 1812 of which his unit was only sent to build forts for the protection of the people. He served with a relative named James Minton/Menton Dean of which a Y-DNA test has proved that he and John were not brothers but probably cousins. As for the mention of another brother, it is yet unknown if that person, Jarrett Dean, was a brother or cousin of either John or James since no reliable data has been located to prove if there was any kinship, but only allegations, thus far. Similarly, there is no record to show if Jarrett also served in the Georgia militia, but he may have served in a local militia where he lived, but that would not have been a State militia.
The surname of John's wife has never been proved, but continues to be perpetuated as fact. Records prove that she was confused with a Nancy Mathis of Georgia, about whom there are ample records proving beyond doubt that the Nancy of Georgia is not the same as the Nancy of Lowndes Co., AL. The burial place of both John and Nancy is unknown, but it is certain they were never in Elmore County where the Coosa River Cemetery is located. Instead, that is the county and cemetery where a son of John and Nancy, who was also named John, was buried.
John Matthews who is often mentioned has been documented to be a brother-in-law of James Minton/Menton Dean.
