Born at Seven Fountains, Eastern Cape on 17th September 1852. His education was rudimentary, there being no school in the village until 1909. Bible classes were addressed by the Minister from Salen riding cross country once a week from Salem. He was taught by his father the basics of carpentry and building skills. He married Johanna Rachel Nel born at Fish River mouth, on 15th July1875, where her parents were missionaies. The Nels were of French Hugenot descent and carriers of the phorphyria gene. Their early life was one of hardship. Having taken up residence at Nazar, SevenFountains, their first two children, Alfred Frederick and Alice Mary were born here. The next son, Stephen James was born at Fish River, where his parents had removed to, joining his in-laws. Their financial position improved somewhat, for they moved back to Seven Fountains and the next child, Phoebe Magdalene was born there. It was then that he built all the underground water storage tanks at New Year Farm for the Emslie Family. As a token of appreciation, the next child a son, was named John Emslie Dickason, born in Grahamstown. The children that followed, twins Sarah Ivy and MabelViolet in 1889 and Rachal Myrtle in 1890 were born at Seven Fountains and the last two, Gladys Fanny Mae in 1893 and Olive Muriel in 1897, were born in Grahamstown where their parents had taken up permanent residence. THe marriage broke down in 1909 and he disappeard from Grahamstown. WE next pick up his trail when he entered the British Colony of Southern Rhodesia in 1927 as one of the building men engaged to erect Chaplin School in Gwelo. He was declared an illegal immigrant and returned to South Africa. He died at the house of his daughter Phoebe on 1st October 1935 and is buried at Primrose cemetery.
