TAG, Vol 63, No. 4, Oct, 1988, page 215:

A False Account of the Birth and Parentage of Edward Doty Mayflower Passenger Exposed --

Genealogical frauds and fallacies of past generations were unfortunately easier to create than they are to destroy and have a habit of resurfacing. In the Family History Library at Salt Lake City is a typescript "Doty Family" (68:iii pp) with no author indicated but ascribed to the late and unlamented Gustave Anjou in the library's catalog. It purports to tie together a number of early emigrants to American colonies and at the end provides a vague unhelpful list of "Sources and Authorities."

Pages 50-62 of this account would persuade the reade that John Doughty was born 17 Jan 1570 at Louth, Co. Lincoln, England, married 11 May 1595 Dudlock, Co Salop, to Ann, d/o William Holland of Durwarton, Co. Salp, was a recusant and was dead by 12 Nov 1609.

To John and Ann (Holland) Doughty are assigned five sons:

  1. Samuel born Dudlock 19 Feb 1596
  2. Rev. John born Dudlick 7 Jan 1597, rector of Wood Norton, Co. Norfolk, graduate of Oxford University and leading divine of his generation.
  3. Edward born 14 May 1598, the Mayflower passenger;
  4. Richard, born London 17 Nov 1599
  5. Thomas bor 13 Aug 1600.

This account has been incorporated into the International Genealogical Index (IGI).

Whether a John Doughty was in fact born at Louth in 1570 I cannot tell, since the Louth register is not available at the library. John Doughty of Dudlick or Duddlewick in the parish of Stottesdon, Co. Salop, DID exist and according to the published version of the Shropshire Visitation of 1623 (Harleian Soc. Pub., Vis Series, 28:250) he did marry (date not indicated) an Ann Holland.

But the Stottesdon registers, which record baptism sof three sons to "John Doughtie of Dudlock"

  • 30 Nov 1576 - Francis
  • 9 Sep 1582 - Thomas
  • 30 May 1584 - John

indicating a much earlier marriage for John and Ann than Anjou shows, do not admit the existence of any of the five purported Doughty sons born in the late 1590s.

Moreover the Dictionary of National Biography account of the career of the Rev. John Doughty (15:258) says that he was born, not in Shropshire, but at Martley near Worcester and there is no evidene of Shropshire connections for him.

This appears to be another case in which Gustave Anjou, not finding the information he sought, simply invented it. It is most unfortunate that what appear to be deliverate falsehoods are given new life and substance by their re-circulation today. Let the reader beware!

The alleged baptisms of Edward Doty of the Mayflower - 1599, Shropshire, England; 14 May 1598, St Mary le Strand, Thurburton Hills, England - were exposed as fictional by Neil D. Thompson, The American Genealogist 66 (1988), p. 215.

There is ongoing research into his origins and a good DNA test project. http://www.edward-doty.org/ is likely the most reliable source for up to date news. They have:

RESEARCH REPORTS

The June 2006 Debrett report states that Edward may be the son of Rev. Edward Doughtie, Dean of Hereford Cathedral, and was born around 1593.  A new report, by English genealogist John Titford, has opened up several new avenues to explore.

The Mayflower Society does not recognize anyone past Edward Doty.
