The son of Margaret Frain and John Duffy of County Mayo, Ireland. He immigrated to the Unites States in 1885 and on 12 May 1889 he married Margaret "Maggie" Duffy, daughter of Bridget Harrison and James Duffy.
Maggie and John had eight (eight) children, Delia, Margaret, Martin, John Joseph, Catherine, Joseph Edward, and, Helen (Sister Margaret Joan).
