About John Charles Guy Eaglestone

John, always known as Guy, was a Springbok tennis player.

He once let James Houston beat him in a tennis match, and everyone was speculating who this James Houston was that could beat a Springbok Tennis Player.

Guy Eaglestone was the first Old Hiltonian to be awarded South African colours for tennis. According to a citation in the Museum he represented South Africa in 1925 – 1926 at Lawn Tennis. More than that, he played competitive tennis in Natal for 50 years and, the citation states, “We pay tribute to the manner in which during this time, you have represented your Club, your Association, your Province and your Country with utmost distinction.” The Natal Lawn Tennis Association ended its citation with the hope “that the coming generation of players may continue to follow the high ideals which the name of Guy Eaglestone has always personified.” (N.L.T.A. 17th day of July 1960).
