About John Elden, I
John was born about 1699. He was the son of Read Elden and Hannah Pemberton. He passed away about 1746.
According to John's descendant Bryce Humphreys, " John Elden Sr. was born around 1699 to Major Read Elden and Hannah Pemberton. Read and Hannah were married in Boston....At some point he (Read and Hannah;s grandson John Elden) moved to Maine where he met Martha Knight. Martha Knight was born in 1703 in Portsmouth, Rockingham, New Hampshire to Nathan Knight and Mary Westbrook. She was one of six daughters and two sons born to Nathan and Mary. Her family lived in Scarborough, Maine around 1720 where her father began operating the Blackpoint Ferry and later went into business with his brother-in-law to provide timber to the Royal Navy for building ship masts4. It must have been at this time when John Elden Sr. met Martha."

from Captain John Elden Jr. and Ruth Sands Their Lives and Families By Bryce R. Humpherys
Hannah Pemberton was from a prominent Puritan family of Boston and Read (Elding) Elden, privateer and deputy governor of The Bahamas. Read's descendants are finding matches at ancestry.com that suggest a connection to the Eldens of Maine. (Possible only because of endogamy in the Bahamas OR an Elding descendant who returned to live in the Bahamas as per family lore) If you descend from this John Elden, regardless of your surname and you have had an autosomal DNA test, won't you please get in touch with me (Michelle Zealander) orSharon Loyley of The Bahamas Project.
"There is a rather large Elding clan in Maine who trace their ancestry back to the first few years of the 18th century and are, no doubt, the descendants of one of Hannah's two brothers. Centered primarily in the Buxton area, the following is a list of families into which Elding/Elden women married. "- Researched and Written for Frontline by by Mario de Valdes y Cocom.
