  • Dear Noble Thank you for your enquiry.

I have searched our records for Alice Banet (Bante) and found no records relating to her. There were no records at all for the name Banet or Bante. It is possible to search our catalogues on line at Index
I searched the IGI on http://www.familysearch.org and whoever has added Alice Banet or Bante has put the christening at St Bartholomew Winchester. Unfortunately, the parish records start for St Bartholomew in 1563 so there is no means of confirming this information. There is a marriage shown for what looks like an Alice Banet and John Emery in 1565 in St Bartholomews. If you would like a copy of this entry please use the Copies by Post Service. Information and a request form can be found on our website.
Please quote the following reference St Bartholomew, Winchester, 55M81/PR1 fiche 1 with their names and the date. If you would like us to do any further research we could do it as part of Paid Research Service and information on this can be found on the website also.
I have also checked the Hampshire Burial index from the 1400 to 1837 and there are no references to a Banet or Bante.
I hope that some of this might be of use.
Yours sincerely, Jane Philpot, Archives Assistant

"Our recorded lineage commences with one John 1 Emery who married, on 10 May 1565 (seven years prior to the “massacre”) at Winchester, Hampshire (Hants), Alice Banet. Subsequent Emery generations of Emery were from Romsey, Hants which is located about eight/nine miles southwest of Winchester. Romsey is a rare old town in Hampshire located on the river Esk which was the Aulton river in the early Romas times. Two items that might be cogent to the Hugenot lineage considerations are that many of the Hugenots who fled France settled in the Romsey, Hants area and the name of John’s wife, “Banet” is of French origin.
Our John 1 Emery is noted as having been born in Winchester ca 154x and died on 16 June 1594 at Romsey, Hants. The birth and death date and ancestry of Alice Banet is unknown. The only known children of John and Alice Banet Emery are two sons, i.e., John 2 Emery, and Thomas Emery who married Tomasine Carter in 1597. The second child is by inference."
