John Flanders (Immortal 32 Gonzales Ranger)

He could possibly be one of the "Southern Flanders" and not from Salisbury Massachusetts.
That family is not related to these Flanders.
Edith Flanders Dunbar says he died in infancy. p.205
"JohnFoster, b. Nov. 6, 1801, at Danbury, N.H. d. Oct.13, 1802, at Danbury, N.H".

'FLANDERS, JOHN (1800–1836).

John Flanders, Alamo defender, son of Levi and Mary (Sargent) Flanders [SIC: not his parents, see comments] was born in Salisbury, Massachusetts, in 1800.

He was in business with his father in Massachusetts until they argued over foreclosing on a mortgage held by a widow.

Flanders left for Texas and never communicated with his family again.

He settled in Gonzales and was part of the force from that town that rode to the relief of the Alamo.

He entered the Alamo on March 1, 1836, with this company and died in the battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836.

John Foster Flanders died in infancy in 1802, he was buried in Danbury New Hampshire. He could not possibly have fought at the Alamo. The author of this fantasy has been widely discredited. - The Flanders Family from Europe to America.....

John Flanders was born in 1800 in Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA. He was son of Levi Flanders and Mary Sargent Flanders (1761-1850). b. Newton, Rockingham, New Hampshire. [1][2] [3]

John was working for his father, when they had an argument over a mortgage which John owned. [4]He wanted to foreclose on the mortgage of a widow, and father disagreed. This ended up causing a rift, so that John left the business and left home. [5] [6] [7]

John Flanders immigrated to Texas. He traveled by way of New Orleans, arriving there by 1832. He never heard from or wrote to his family again. No evidence is found of a marriage. [4] First he was listed as resident of the Austin Colony. GLO records also list this in the Old 300 Settlers. When the settlers became agitated by the Mexican government's treatment of the settlers, John enlisted also in the Gonzales Rangers as Private. Gonzales lists him as a resident. [2]John served in the Siege of Bexar.[7] [6]

When the letter arrived Feb 23 of 1836, John Flanders was one of the Immortal 32 who responded to Col. Travis letter calling for aid for the Defenders of the Alamo. The Immortal 32 (Gonzales Rangers) arrived at night, sneaked through the Mexican army lines, into the Alamo on March 1, 1836. [7]

John Flanders was in the garrison along with the other Immortal 32" and defenders. All were killed in the Battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836. [7] A memorial is in San Fernando Cathedral.[8] A Memorial can also be found be in Gonzales Memorial Museum in Gonzales, Gonzales County, Texas, USA.[2]

:NOTE: The Estate of John Flanders in 1839 was certified by the Republic of Texas a bounty for his service to receive 1/3 (one third) league of land grant. This was located in Harrisburg County on Carpenter's Bayou, a branch of Buffalo Bayou. (Harrisburg -Eastern part of Harris County, had a sawmill for cutting lumber between 1825 -1836. [9]Administrator of Estate Allen Vince sold this land grant to W D C Harris for $120. In 1851 the Flanders heirs received more land bounty (1920 acres), 1/3 league and another in Harris county "for having fallen with Travis in the Alamo" and the Defenders.
