About Captain John Fleming

CAVEAT: A number of sources, books and sites give Col. Charles Fleming (who was apparently the first of this family in America) as 'the son of Sir Thomas Fleming, son of the 1st Earl of Wigton. (Charles' father is also seen as John and Alexander.) This is incorrect, anyway Charles' father wouldn't have been the 1st Earl of Wigton but the 2nd. While the Earls of Wigton connection may be possible or even probable, there is at present NO PROOF of this. Many of us keep trying to correct this on such sites as FamilySearch.com but it keeps showing up again . Fleming DNA projects have tried to trace this line but the male line in Scotland failed in the 17th century so this doesn't look promising. John 5th Lord Fleming was the Great Chamberlain of Scotland under Mary of Scots and is said to have danced at her wedding. And one of his daughters-Mary Fleming-was one of Queen Mary's "four Mary's"- her ladies-in-waiting. Its such an interesting line that people want to be connected but 'wanting' in genealogy doesn't make it so.

Additional Curator's Notes:

John Fleming was born August 27, 1633 in Scotland and died April 27, 1686 in Charles Parish, York County, Virginia. His wife's name was Mary but she was not Mary Bolling. His wife's maiden name is not currently known. Some sources show her name as Mercy.

One John Fleming, born c.1633 in Scotland was granted headrights in Virginia in 1653, and settled in Charles Parish, York County.

The parish records for Christ Church show that a John Fleming, member of that church, died August 27, 1686 and was buried in the churchyard. It has not been proven that this is the same John Fleming, who had been known to be a part of St. Charles Parish.

Mary Bolling DID marry a John Fleming, but her John Fleming was born in 1697 in Virginia. The two men named John Fleming are often confused. They should not be, as their dates and places of birth are quite different. Current research is pointing in the direction of the John Fleming who married Mary Bolling being the grandson of this John Fleming.

Parentage - There are three prevailing theories as to the parents of John Fleming.

  • This John is often erroneously put into the family of the Flemings who were Earls of Wigton. That family is well-documented in credible sources such as Cracoft's Peerage. He is not their descendant.
  • The next likely candidates for his parents were often considered to be Thomas Fleming and Judith Tarleton. Recent work on that branch of the Fleming family makes it unlikely that he could have been their son. This was a Yorkshire family and this John Fleming was born in Scotland, according to his headright claims.
  • Current thought leans toward Alexander Fleming of Glasgow and wife Elizabeth or "Elspett" Anderson, also of Glasgow. This has not yet been proven. The difficulty lies in many web trees who also tie Alexander to the Earls of Wigton with flimsy proof.
  • For now, we will leave him with parents unknown. PLEASE do not add parents to John Fleming's profile without proof.

Residence in Virginia - Many web trees put John and his family in Charles Parish, New Kent County, Virginia. Two of his children are documented as being born in Charles Parish, York County, Virginia. New Kent County and York County are neighboring counties. New Kent was created from York County (see Wikipedia for each county). There could have been a Charles Parish in both counties, but given that his children were born after New Kent was formed, it is probable that he lived in Charles Parish, York County, and not in New Kent County.

In American history, when a new county is formed by taking land from existing counties, one must be careful to match the correct county with the event being recorded. This small attention to detail will eliminate future errors and headaches.
