About John Gaither

Combined Passenger Lists for the "George" 1616-1623 . [TL;DR - severely edited for relevance]

The following entries were obtained from Hotten book 8a from the Musters of the Inhabitants in Virginia 1624/1625 chapters, pages 201 thru 265, which lists the muster captain, and what ship the individual arrived on.

Gatter John, 1620 voyage, at muster at Mulburie Island, January 25, 1624. [Note: The George actually arrived, with John Gatter aboard, on April 29, 1619.]

JOHN GATHER also on list of "Living and Dead", 1623/4, as part of the household of Sir Francis Wyatt at James City.

There is no further record of any John Gater, Gatter or Gaither until the voyage of the Assurance in 1635, when a John Gater, age 36, appears on the passenger list along with a Joan Gater, age 23 (later records support her being his wife), and another John Gater, age 15. (The latter obviously cannot be the son of Joan Gater, nor the same person as the 1619 George immigrant.)

It is possible that the elder John Gater was the 1619 immigrant, who returned to England in search of a wife (women still being scarce in the Colony), but no confirming records have been found.

Further information regarding the younger John Gater is hard to come by, leading many researchers to conclude that he soon died or returned to England.
