"...Last in list of the Founders, though by reason of his early connection with the business and the constant and sagacious influence of his judgment in the councils of his seniors, by which the policy of the Concern was moulded during its formative period, Mr. Gause may justly be considered as belonging as much to the generation of the men who have passed away as to the present generation, in his capacity as head of the Corporation of The Harlan & Hollingsworth Company.
He was born on September 3Oth, 1823, nearly a quarter of a century before the practical introduction of iron ships, far from the scene of his then undreamed-of future labors and successes—another illustration of the mysterious play of chances in the complicated game of life. His father, Harlan Gause, as well as his grandfathers for four generations, and his mother's family for six generations (as far back, indeed, as 1682, when his mother, Rebecca Way Taylor's thrice great-grandfather, Robert Taylor, came from Clatterwick, Cheshire, in the company of William Penn, to claim from the generous hand of nature a broader heritage in the New World) had lived upon some of the identical lands then granted the first owners, and shortly afterward merged by a previous marriage into one estate. Charles Gause, the first of his name in this country, came from Wales, with his young wife, Jane Powell, daughter of Evan Powell, of Radnor, Wales, in 1699, and settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania, where his descendants have lived down to the death of Harlan Cause, and the removal of the subject of this sketch to Wilmington, on January 23d, 1843..."
