John A. Gearheart
John Amherst Gearheart, son of William and Loretta Gearheart, was born at Oakfield, Iowa, January 22, 1885 and passed away at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Corning, Iowa June 11, 1981 at the age of 96 years, 4 months, and 20 days.
His whole life was spent in Iowa, having moved to Iowa county while quite young and returning to Audubon County where on November 25, 1906 he was married to Alta Cousins. In November 1916 he moved with his family to Adams county.
He spent many years farming after which he lived with his son, William and family for about 25 years, helping his son with the construction business. His hobbies included gardening, fishing, and conversing and visiting with his friends. He was a kind an loving father and was especially fond of children.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alta; twin sons Leo and Cleo; a daughter, Marjorie Lyall, grandson, Phillip James, and great-granddaughter Jacquelin Kritzinger, also by his two brothers and eight sisters.
Survivors include three children, Velma James, and husband Earl of Villisca; John Garland and wife Alice of Ft. Worth, Texas and William and wife Rowena of Corning; ten grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; and 3 great great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Goodwin-Lindsay Funeral Home in Corning June 15 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Clarence Lautt officiating. Burial was at Oakfield Cemetery, Brighton, Iowa.
Music was provided by Kathy Schafer. Pallbearers were Leland Goneseth, Emery Martinsen, John Parrott, Francis Roland, Kenneth Roland, and Joe Hatton.
