About John George Shrive Cheney

When Manny was a small child he was diagnosed as 'anemic'. His mother, upon doctor's instructions fed him regularly on raw sheep's liver until he recovered. When he was about 9 years old he left school to sell newspapers. His dream was to have his own business.

He joined the S.A. army before he married Maria Elizabeth Joubert and when the World War II broke out in 1939, being very involved in trying to enter the manufacturing world (Curtain Rings) with his father, William Cheney, who was an excellent salesman, he was determined NOT to go up NORTH to fight! The only way he could prevent them from sending him off and leaving his wife and children, was to prove himself insane! He thus pretended to be building a submarine in a room the size of a bathroom! The result was they sent him to the Pretoria 'Weskoppies' mental hospital for observation and was declared 'unfit for combat'. Then again Manny was a very good 'story teller' so we were not quite sure whether to believe the submarine story.

After his son, Johnny was born in 1944 he packed the family off to Carolina (the birth place of his mother) to manufacture curtain rings & dog chains. But life was hard because of the war. After his second son, William Shrive (Tickey) was born in Carolina he went back to Pretoria continuing manufacturing his products until he finally bought industrial ground and built a factory in Koedoespoort Pretoria in the early 1950's. At that time they were renting a double story home at 19 Manning Street, Colbyn situated only a few kilometers from his factory in Koedoespoort.
