About John Hamilton Gibson
John married Arie Gibson July 8, 1886. Three of their children died at a young age. In 1889 John founded the Grove Messenger, and was the editor until Fall of 1904. He sold the paper in 1906. He served two terms as engrossing clerk in the Cherokee Senate 1889 and 1890. In 1897 he was an elected member of the lower house of the Cherokee Legislature for a term of two years and re-elected for another term. He served as Speaker of the House. In 1917 and 1919 he was a member of the Oklahoma Legislature. He was mayor of Grove, Oklahoma four different terms. County Commissioner of Delaware County from 1920-1925. Vice President of the First State Bank of Jay Oklahoma. Treasurer and secretary of the Grove Brick and Tile Co. Founded in 1899. Director of the Citizens Bank of Grove. Member of the Woodmen of the World. Member of the free and accepted masons of America, Grove lodge #187 and served as secretary of this lodge for two years. He also taught at Olympus Schools. He attended the Male Seminary school at Tahlequah, Oklahoma and was on the honor roll. He owned about 600 acres of valuable farming land. His farm was one of the oldest in the state. He had many buildings that were constructed over a hundred years ago. He had modernized all the buildings and equipment on his farm. He also has a Delco lighting plant and water supply in his home.
