Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Giffard-394

The only John born to Thomas Giffard is very clearly listed with the wife listed below. His only children listed are

  1. Lewis (no further record),
  2. John (no further record), and
  3. Thomas, his heir.

John Giffard was the son and heir of Thomas Giffard and Wilmot Knight.[1]

Marriage to Elizabeth or Joan Dabernon

Visitations shows the name of his wife of John Giffard as Jane Dabernon in both the Giffard Pedigree[1] and the Arscott of Dunland Pedigree.[2]

However, the Inquisitions Postmortem lists her name as Elizabeth, however, there is no proof in existence.[3]

8 Non 1450: ELIZABETH DABERNON: Writ de etate probanda: She is the kin and heir of John Mulys, as one of the daughters of Isabel, one of the daughters of John. Majority claimed by John Giffard, her husband. By royal grant [CFR 1437–45, pp. 281–2], the lands and tenements from her inheritance are in the custody of Otes Gilberd. The escheator of Devon is ordered to prove the age of Elizabeth, who is said to have been born and baptized at Swimbridge, and to warn Otes to be present. [Dorse:] Memorandum that Otes was warned to be at Exeter on 18 November by Nicholas Bokelly, escheator.

Visitations states that Elizabeth (Dabernon) Giffard was the wife of Johem Battyn, son of William Battyn of Exeter.[2] Either the transcriber of the Inquisitions assumed her name was Elizabeth, not Joan, or Joan predeceased her sister who, as a widow, married, John Giffard.
