About John Gilchrist MacMillan
Notes from Pastor Graham Robert Turner:
Changed the surname of his descendants to MacMillan as he believed this was the correct spelling.
As far as I know uncle John worked on farms in Scotland, possibly on the Duke of Argyll's estate, as a ploughman. He served 4 years in WWI and then a further year with the army of occupation in France. He married Mary and they emigrated to NZ in the early 1920's, assisted I believe by my father Charlie. For a time they lived with mum and dad then moved to do farm work nearby. His work included shepherding, dairying and cropping. He moved around a bit trying to better himself but farm bosses in those days were pretty hard - he continued working on farms until he retired to a small house in Feilding on a gov't. pension. He was a staunch member of the Masonic and Orange Lodges. He always had a good garden and also grew his own tobacco.
The McMillan family bible was sent out to John.
