About John Graham Purviance

John Purviance was a son of David Purviance II and Margaretha S. McEntyre of Lancaster Co., PA. When John was young the family relocated near Concord, Cabarrus Co., NC. He served from North Carolina during the Revolutionary War, and his service is recognized by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
He married Nancy Ferguson 10 Jul 1783 in North Carolina and they had six children: Elizabeth, David Simpson, Matilda, Margaret J. "Peggy", Alexander Caldwell, and John Graham. Nancy died three days following the birth of her youngest son, John Graham.
John married second to Elizabeth Lizenby on 10 Dec 1798 in North Carolina, and they had four children: James, Samuel, Nancy, and Eliza Sellars.
With the exception of Matilda, all of his children settled in Sangamon Co., IL. John followed his children and settled in Sangamon Co., IL.
The original spelling of the surname is Purviance; however, the family changed the spelling to the way the name was pronounced in Illinois.
