Alexander Franklin Purvines was a son of John Graham Purvines and Elizabeth Colman. He had one brother, Elder Cornelius Cicero Purvines. His grandfather, John Purviance (later spelled Purvines) served in the Revolutionary War.

A. Franklin Purvines attended Rush Medical College in Chicago, IL for three years. He married 7 May 1868 in Sangamon Co., IL to Margaret S. Duncan. They had one son, Gilbert C. Purvines.
