Notes for SUSANNAH WHITE: Some descendents say the Susannah was the daughter of a Mr. White, but have not found any proof of that.

Thomas Grayson of Deal in Kent, eldest son of John, inherited the plantation in Spotsylvania County. This Thomas has been a mystery since he did not sell his land by agent, and since he was never found on any other American record nor on the Deal of Kent's records.

EARLY AMERICAN GRAYSONS

The earliest Graysons found in the American Records were William and Richard, who were transported from England in the 1600's. No further record of either has ever been found.

Charles Grason, son of Mary and Thomas Grason, was baptized at Christ Church, Middlesex County, Virginia 15 May 1687, according to that church's parish register. Joanne or Johan Grayson signed as witness to the will of William Travis of old Pappahannock on 14 February 1686/7, Will Book #6, pg. 88. This Johan could have been the Latin version of John, and could mean that the first John Grayson was in America by 1687. From the names of his children, John may have been the son of Thomas and Mary.

The first record of the John Grayson who seems to have been the progenitor of the graysons of this book was attorney-in-fact to acknowledge the release of dower from Marie Gibson, Lancaster County, Virginia in 1700, Deed Book 7, pg. 400-402.

John Grayson of Lancaster County, according to Deed Book 9, pg. 70 owned land 29 Ocyober 1703.

He was a witness to the will of Andre Jackson 29 July 1710, Will Book 10, pg. 41. Andrew Jackson was the minister of Christ Church Parrish, to wich John Grayson also belonged from the early 1700's according to parrish records. Andrew Jackson left 908 acres of land at the mouth of Deep Run about 12 miles above the falls of the Rappahannock River in Richmond County 29 July 1704, Northern Neck Grant Book 3, pg. 30-32, to his brother, James Jackson, of Belfast, Ireland. This 908 acres was part of the original grant of 1238 acres to Andrew Jackson.

John Grayson bought this 908 acres from James Jackson for 100 pounds 7 July 1714, Richmond County Deed Book 6, pg. 241. This deed included a total of 1238 acres. John Grayson bought an additional 500 acres in 1714 in Spotsylvania County from William Smith of Gloucester County. When Richmond County was divided, part of John Grayson's land was in King George County. In other words, without moving, John had lived in Lancaster County until the part where he lived became Richmond County, then King George County.

John Grayson was a taker of tithes for Christ Church in the year 1716 and appeared on the registers of Christ Church for several years during that period, William & Mary Quarterly, Vol. 21, pg. 107, 1st edition. This tithe was limited to five pounds and three quaters of a pound of tobacco for each tithe in the parish to finance the county. John Grayson at that time had three tithes, meaning that he had three people in his family old enough to be taxed. Grayson Plantation was shown on a map of the Northern Neck of Virginia in 1737. It adjoined the plantation of Governor Alexander Spotswood at the mouth of Massaponax Creek, now on maps as at the intersection of Route 17 and Route 2.

John Grayson's widow, Susannah, had as securities for her 1000 pound bond Ambrose Grayson and Thomas Hill 2 March 1735/36, Will Book A. John's inventory was signed by Benjamin Porter, Zachary Gibbs, and Mr. Thomas 28 August 1755; Will Book 2, pgs. 221-222 and 226. Inventory (among other things listed) 1 large steer and 5 smaller ones 3 cows and calves 4 cows with yearlings a heifer with calf 2 heifers 2 young steers 2 yews and 4 lambs 6 sows and pigs 21 young hogs 2 young horses 2 mares and colts 1 old horse 1 colt furniture tools saddles 3642 pounds of tobacco 30 ells linen 10 yards of Irish linen 11 yards of ticken

the following slaves: Pompey Jenny Phillis Sarah George

John Grayson's children are not named in any of the probate record, but can be determined form marriage, deed and other probate records as:

  • Thomas of Deal in Kent,
  • Amborse who married Alice James,
  • Ann who married first John Quarles, 3 October 1722, and later Thomas Harrison,
  • Mary who married John Catlett, 20 October 1726,
  • John Jr. who's wife's name was Martha,
  • Benjamin who marriedSusannah Monroe, and
  • Elizabeth who married first Thomas Hill 18 April 1731 and second William Cowne, 17 March 1743. William Cowne signed with Alice Grayson as a security for Ambrose's estate in 1743.

Notes

  • Residence: With son Ambrose, Massaponax Creek, surveyed tobacco growers in their precinct, one of six precincts, and enumerated more than a million plants in their precinct, 16% of the total. 1726
